Dr. Cárdenas-Hagan is a bilingual speech-language pathologist, certified academic language therapist, and a leader in bilingual reading intervention. She is the president of Valley Speech Language and Learning Center in Brownsville, Texas, and is an associate research professor for the Texas Institute for Measurement Evaluation and Statistics at the University of Houston. Her research interests include the development of early reading assessments for Spanish-speaking students, in addition to the development of reading interventions for bilingual students. This presentation is designed for elementary educators, speech-language pathologists, parents, and school administrators.

 

Outcomes:

– Explore the science of reading as a foundation for evidence-based practices with emergent bilinguals and dually identified language learners, including students with dyslexia

– Identify classroom practices and instructional approaches that support an aligned approach to language learning

– Consider the structural barriers to providing equitable access to the science of reading aligned practices and programs

– Implement practices that ensure all students have equitable access to high-quality reading instruction
